Lutaaya to Gov’t: Instead of giving MPs money to buy new cars, partner with Kiira Motors, Leave Ugx 165 bn in Uganda

Journalist Daniel Lutaaya has proposed that Government of Uganda should now partner with Kiira motors to start purchasing vehicles for the MPs yet to be elected in 2026.

At the beginning of each Parliamentary term, government offers Ugx 200 million to each MP to buy a new car.

At the beginning of this term, MPs wanted to be given Ugx 300 million for the new cars. However, the Adminstration at Parliament agreed to offer each MP Ugx 200 million for them to get SUVs for their transportation in and around Kampala.

The MPs buy vehicles of their own choices. However, Lutaaya, in a tweet on social media platform X indicated that his new idea would have hybrid (SUV) vehicles made in Uganda.

“Next year, we shall have new MPs. Now that Kiira motors is up and running, instead of giving each MP 300 million to buy a Toyota, let’s have @rggoobi (Permanent Secretary Ministry of Finance Ramathan Ggoobi) wire all the Ugx 165 billion to Kiira Motors in June this year in preparation for the new MPs. Each MP will get a hybrid SUV (both fuel and electric) made in Uganda,” he said.

He added that “We shall be supporting a Ugandan company owned by us taxpayers, saving the environment since the cars are rechargeable and it will also be a free advert for Kiira with 527 of our own cars driving around town. We shall hit 3 birds with one stone.”

It is not clear whether Parliament will agree to the idea and support a Ugandan entity.
