The Democratic Party (DP) presidency race drew keen attention during the Friday, 30th May elections in Mbarara District.
While Hon. Nobert Mao, the incumbent president, retained his seat, Hon. Richard Sebamala of Bukoto Central Constituency stood out as a potential future leader of the party. Sebamala’s record as a legislator, youth advocate, and entrepreneur positions him as a dynamic candidate capable of revitalizing Uganda’s oldest political party.
Other contenders included Hon. Michael Lulume Bayiga and Northern Uganda DP president Alia Alita, representing the party’s emerging leadership, yet Sebamala’s combination of grassroots influence, political experience, and reformist vision sets him apart.
Sebamala has built a strong reputation nationally and regionally through his work in Parliament under Speaker Anita Annet Among’s leadership. He has championed the rights of marginalized communities, particularly youth, through mentorship in business, leadership, and sports. Many young people across Uganda have benefited from his guidance, enabling them to start businesses and engage in constructive societal roles.
His engagement with the youth and focus on empowerment strengthens the party’s grassroots support and broadens his appeal among the electorate. Moreover, Sebamala’s international exposure, through travel and business ventures in Turkey, the United States, and London, connects him to global networks that can support the Democratic Party’s modernization.
Sebamala’s decision to contest for the DP presidency is driven by his deep commitment to the party and the desire to restore its historical significance. His office in Bukoto Central is adorned with the party’s blue flag and portraits of past leaders, reflecting his respect for the DP legacy. He openly criticizes current leadership for not reviving the party’s relevance and advocates for transparency, inclusivity, and unity. His vision includes constitutional reforms, youth empowerment, and initiatives to create opportunities for all members, signaling a clear roadmap for a more participatory party.
Politically, Sebamala has proven his capabilities through historic victories. In the 2021 general elections, he defeated long-serving legislator Edward Ssekandi with 9,916 votes, demonstrating his strategic acumen and ability to mobilize grassroots support. This achievement underscores his readiness to challenge entrenched political structures and lead change. Beyond politics, Sebamala’s entrepreneurial initiatives, such as Tender Bridals and other ventures, demonstrate his business acumen and understanding of sustainable economic development. These skills are crucial for leading a party seeking to remain relevant in Uganda’s evolving political landscape.
In Bukoto Central Constituency, Sebamala has delivered significant development projects, empowering women, youth, and vulnerable populations. Through the Sebamala Foundation, he supports education, health, and sports programs that enhance community cohesion and engagement. His initiatives, such as organizing the annual Sebamala Cup, showcase his commitment to youth empowerment and community development. This hands-on approach to leadership has earned him respect and recognition across the constituency, strengthening his credibility as a potential national party leader.
Sebamala’s stance in Parliament reflects his commitment to democratic principles and good governance. He has consistently opposed corruption and the monopolistic tendencies of long-standing political structures under the National Resistance Movement. His advocacy for transparency and accountability resonates with Ugandans seeking reform and positions him as a principled leader. Additionally, his regional connections, including relationships with East African leaders like Kenya’s William Ruto, provide strategic alliances that can support the Democratic Party’s growth and influence.
Raised in a humble Catholic family in Masaka District, Sebamala developed a strong work ethic and moral foundation from a young age. Selling coffee as a child to support his schooling, he cultivated entrepreneurship and resilience early on. His education, spanning St. Modesta Bisanje, Namilyango College, and Kyambogo University, where he studied Civil Engineering, equipped him with both technical and leadership skills. These experiences have shaped Sebamala into a well-rounded leader, capable of addressing Uganda’s political and developmental challenges.
Ultimately, Sebamala’s vision for the Democratic Party is centered on unity, development, and empowerment. He aims to create a party that is democratic, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all Ugandans, particularly the youth and marginalized communities. By promoting constitutional reforms, grassroots mobilization, and sustainable development initiatives, Sebamala demonstrates a forward-thinking leadership style. Coupled with his proven record, integrity, and extensive networks, he is well-positioned to transform the Democratic Party into a modern and impactful political force.
Hon. Richard Sebamala’s combination of political experience, entrepreneurial success, and commitment to community development makes him a credible candidate for the next leadership of the Democratic Party. His achievements in Bukoto Central Constituency, coupled with his vision for youth empowerment and party reform, signal a promising future for Uganda’s oldest political party under his potential leadership.
