Dear Hon. Norbert Mao,
REQUEST TO QUIT THE AFFAIRS OF DEMOCRATIC PARTY
I appreciate your 15-year leadership as President of the Democratic Party, succeeding John Sebaana Kizito in 2010. Your dedication and service have been commendable. However, your recent collaboration with the NRM government has sparked controversy, and we feel it’s essential to address this matter with you.
Your appointment as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs by President Yoweri Museveni, following a memorandum of understanding between you and the NRM party chairman, has been met with widespread criticism. Many believe this alliance will harm the Democratic Party’s prospects in upcoming elections. We urge you to consider stepping down as DP President General to protect the party’s interests and avoid further division.
While I acknowledge your achievements within the DP, your recent actions seem driven by personal interests rather than the party’s well-being. Your attempts to justify this alliance by drawing parallels with Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere and John Sebaana Kizito’s roles in Museveni’s regime are not convincing. The context then was different, with Uganda recovering from a guerrilla war and requiring unity. In contrast, your decision to collaborate with the NRM today, amidst widespread criticism of human rights abuses, corruption, and constitutional manipulation, raises concerns.
It’s time for a new generation of leaders to take the reins. Talented individuals like Richard Sebamaala could bring fresh perspectives and energy to the party. Your continued involvement might inadvertently harm the party you once served so well.
We appreciate your service and legacy within the DP. If you feel aligned with the NRM’s vision, you may find opportunities to contribute there. However, we hope you’ll consider the potential consequences of your actions on the Democratic Party and its supporters.
Sincerely, Ruth Sharon Nansamba
