Endometriosis is a chronic condition that silently affects millions of women worldwide, disrupting health, fertility, and daily productivity. In our communities, countless women, girls, mothers, and wives endure intense pain that sidelines them from work, school, and family life—sometimes relying on painkillers or hormones just to get through the day. Despite causing unbearable discomfort, it often goes unspoken.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus—on ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other organs. Responding to hormonal changes, it triggers inflammation, scarring, cysts, and severe pain before and during the menstrual period. Dr. Joe Njagi, founder of the African Centre for Endometriosis, emphasizes: “Painful periods are not normal.” Potential causes include retrograde menstruation, genetic factors, or immune system issues, striking women from adolescence through menopause without mercy.
Globally, it impacts 1 in 10 women of reproductive age—over 176 million people. In East Africa, growing awareness is a positive shift, yet diagnostic delays prolong suffering and strain relationships, careers, and education.
Early detection changes everything. Watch for hallmark symptoms like worsening menstrual cramps, chronic pelvic or back pain, pain during intercourse, painful bowel movements or urination (especially during periods), heavy bleeding or spotting, infertility (in 30-50% of cases), and fatigue accompanied by bloating, nausea, or digestive woes. Track your symptoms and consult a doctor—never dismiss pain as “normal.”
While no cure exists, effective treatments ease symptoms and restore quality of life. Complement these with lifestyle changes: an anti-inflammatory diet, regular exercise, yoga, and stress reduction. For severe cases, laparoscopic surgery removes misplaced tissue; hysterectomy remains a last resort.
According to Dr Ssekulima Rogers, an endometriosis surgeon, “Not every gynaecologist can treat endometriosis.” One therefore needs to go to an endometriosis specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Together, we can build a world where no woman suffers alone—act for yourself, your daughters, and mothers everywhere. Painful periods are not normal; help is within reach, and thriving awaits.
