Former Minister Rukutana explains 2026 political contest, why he has many wives

Former Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana is a candid man, bold and very expressional.

Mostly remembered for telling off the Commission of Inquiry on Land matters Chairperson Catherine Bamugemereire to go and report to God in case she wasn’t able to report to the Head of State Yoweri Museveni on his misgivings, Rukutana was also been a contentious person in the 2021 election when he pointed a gun at supporters of his opponent in the constituency.

When he lost his bid to return to Parliament, he was also dropped by President Museveni as a member of the cabinet and turned to his private life.

He now works as a private lawyer, engaging in a number of litigation cases while also looking after his family and relatives.

The former minister sat down with the New Vision this week and said he wouldn’t return to elective politics since he has already transcended to a new and rather happy life.

He said, Life is very interesting, Parliament, Cabinet and all that; Assignments that one has to do, but if you are like me, who I believe has never been a career politician, you go there, you do your best but at the back of your mind, you keep on knowing that you have to leave, at one time or another.

He said, retiring came when he was prepared and yearning for it. “I wish you could know how many people have come to me saying, we are sorry we want you back. And do you know what I have told them? My tenure for politics expired,” he said.

He also added that even when his constituency is free and they just appoint him, he will not return. “Even if today, they declared that Rushenyi is now free, there are no elections, and they appoint me MP for Rushenyi, I would turn down their appointment. That chapter, to me, is closed.”

Just after his election loss in 2021, a video of him and a woman having fun. Asked about his life with family, he said, “When you find me dancing with my children, you might not think they are my children. And God blessed me with many. Most are adults like me, with 15 grand children.

Some times we go dancing with my children, my grand children, and that’s life. And I know my God is happy with it. When I am praying to God, one sin I know he will never condemn me for is marrying many wives. What sin is it?” He says.
