The race for Bukoto East Member of Parliament is getting tricky. Several old school politicians are making headways to returning to the top seats while flamboyant young people and making a triumphant entry.
The old dogs are asked questions they have for long failed to answer, while the new entrants on to the political scene are inspiring hope, faith and love for a population long lost inadequate political identity.
As incumbent Ronald Evans Kanyike is struggling controlling outright hostility from a population for long he abandoned, Alintuma Nsambu struggling for a come back, Christopher Mbigo, a new entrant is inspiring hope, for a population that seeks honesty and leadership.
On a bumpy road to Kiyumba sub county, off the main Kako junction on the Masaka – Bukakata highway, is home to more than 10,000 residents.
In such a coffee growing vicinity, all residents are striving for a new dawn, a better era of honesty and transparency in leadership.
“What haven’t we seen? We were here when Nsambu was MP, then Namayanja came and now Kanyike. All we can see is more of the same. They come, give us some little money to eat and drink, but none supports our activities in income generation. What we desire is honesty in leadership.” Said Richard Kalanzi one of the cyclists in the area.
Bukoto East is a tricky constituency. It holds a shoreline of Lake Victoria while enduring a village livelihood, and yet it annexes the main Masaka City in Nyendo Mukungwe Division.
It’s population suffers from the dire effects of inappropriate fishing practices while also struggling with Ramsar sites with wetlands and pests, diseases that affect their crops.
Well as it’s main road is tarmac, all feeder roads are in dangerous conditions. Neither do they have enough affordable pre and primary schools for the many school going children.
“None of our MPs has worked on our fishing challenges in Bukakata and Kachanga away from just talking. When our leaders fight, they do so with their constituents and we wonder who now is the leader,” Richard Mawanda, a fisherman at Kachanga landing site, told this website.
In Mbigo Christopher Matovu, Bukoto finds hope and solace. As many donate to influencers, the Uganda Revenue Authority customs officer finds solace in supporting initiatives that bring change within society.
On April 20th this year, the youthful mobilizer donated coffee seedlings to the Kabaka’s subjects and leaders to engage in the creation of a coffee demonstration farm in Buwunge Sub County.
The royal initiative aimed at boosting household incomes and fostering self-reliance through agriculture within the area.
Upon declaration of interest to represent the people of Bukoto East in the August House, he also indicated that similar projects will be deliberated in the different sub counties within Bukoto East.
“We want such desired projects. If our leaders learn from Mbigo, we shall transform the lives of our people,” says a leader who asked not to be named.
Born in the densely populated Bukakata sub county, Mbigo has been a leader in the Nkobazambogo youth group, a platform fighting to improve the lives of the young people within Buganda Kingdom.
He comes at a time when Alintuma Nsambu, a Ugandan Ambassador contesting for the same seat is accused of disrespecting Kabaka Mutebi when he likened himself to the King.
Also, Ronald Evans Kanyike is accused of abandoning the constituency and focused on a love dovey relationship between him and the Masaka District Woman MP.
