The vernacular saying that staying close to a lake is not a guarantee that you will be filled with all the Lake resource and valuables is becoming true in Kalangala District as the island paradise is hit by an immense water scarcity outrage.
The water scarcity that has taken more than five days is a result of failure by the water supply operators, Kalangala Infrastructure Service failing to pump water to the different beneficiaries, especially in Kalangala Town.
Several of the leaders, stakeholders are now struggling with fetching water from the available wells including Sango, Kitimuntu, Nkulwe while those at the Landing sites of Mwena and Lutoboka are now using the gravity flow systems provided by Government of Uganda.
The scarcity has also led to the rising costs of water in Kalangala Town as a jerycan is now sold at Ugx 800.
“We are about to move without bathing in this sunshine just because we lack water. Fetching it is also another problem since many of the people Fetching water also engage in other economic activities,” says Faruk Sansabula, one of the leaders in Kalangala.
The water operator, Kalangala Infrastructure Services remains tight lipped on the matter. However, Mr. Henry Ssebunya, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner has asked Islanders to remain calm as the technical issue that led to the loss of water in Kalangala Town is being handled by experts.
