NUP’s Nakimuli runs to hiding as Project ‘Kick Helen out of Parliament’ gains momentum

Kalangala District Woman MP Helen Nakimuli has been forced to hide as tides shift. Islanders have launched a new project to kick her out of Parliament.

The project was launched by a number of island residents, including MP Nakimuli’s top confidants who say Kampala partying has forced her to forget the core reasons of getting to Parliament.

Nakimuli went for nominations to retain the Kalangala District Woman MP seat. However, she faced trials as a number of her supporters and those from the NRM party instead came chanting NRM slogans, all supporting her competitor, Hon Idah Nabayiga, a woman she ousted in 2021.

Nabayiga was the woman MP for Kalangala. However, during the NUP/People Power wave, the Islanders chose red, disregarded Hon. Nabayiga on grounds that they needed change.

However, the Islanders today shifted positions and said they all returned to Nabayiga, an MP they say supported them with education, health service delivery, and several income generating skills attainment.

“By January 15th, we must have a leader ready to work. We are tired of people who will let us suffer another five years,” said one of MP Nakimuli’s top confidants.

At the time she was ejected from Parliament, Hon. Nabayiga was supporting up to 289 Islanders with tertiary education. She had also lobbied for support, offering Ugx 30 million per parish to ensure they start income generating activities and had initiated a skilling hub in Kalangala Town.

However, no sooner had she lost the seat that all projects collapsed due to lack of further funding. Her successor, Hon Nakimuli, never engaged in any of the activities until today.

The residents also accuse Nakimuli, who acted as the shadow Minister for Fisheries for enacting a harsh Fisheries and Aquaculture act, which now moves to jail any person engaging in illegal fishing for up to 30 years.

Upon completing nomination, Nakimuli tried to move with a convoy which was shut down barely a kilometer away from Kalangala District Headquarters.

However, her opponent, Hon. Nabayiga was welcomed by hundreds of supporters who made a procession for her through Kalangala Town to Mwena Landing site together with her Bujumba County counterpart Willy Lugoloobi.

Lugoloobi is the former District Chairperson and now moots to unseat Julius Mukasa Opondo who has served as Bujumba County MP for 10 years. Residents accuse Opondo for not making any submission in Parliament for the last 10 years.

Nakimuli later moved to Kasekulo Landing site where she hopes to engage the population on revoting her into Parliament.

Both Nabayiga and Nakimuli have been nominated today Thursday October 23rd 2025.
