Radio Ssese goes off, several Journalists affected as cyclone storms hit Kalangala

 

Kalangala based 101.9 FM Ssese FM will be off air as the cyclone storm hits Kalangala hard.

 

 

On Saturday morning, a cyclone that ended with a devastating hailstorm destroyed properties estimated at Ugx10.374 billion including the Island Central Police Station.

 

 

Also, four people, including a Police Officer, Sgt Mujaasi Steven perished in the tragedy.

 

 

 

At Radio Ssese, the transmitor and the associated antennas were all demolished while all lights and producing counsele, three computers were all destroyed.

 

 

 

According to Daudi Ssempiira, the station manager, it might take time without restoring the already burdened radio since the resource envelop for repairs and maintenance is limited.

“It might take us indefinitely to restore and get back to work. We have already been grappling with challenges, including unpaid dues to our contracted technicians,” he said.

 

 

Radio Ssese is the only functioning radio that relys information to the 84 Islands that make the Ssese archipelago. It also serves a nearby Buvuma island district with broadcast information to the citizenry.

 

 

Other Journalists affected by the cyclone include Nkuba Samuel of the New Vision, Henry Lubulwa of the Entebbe Post, David Ssekayinga, a freelance journalist working with Monitor Publications, Maria Nakitende and Samuel Kwesiga.

 

 

Samuel Nkuba who works with the New Vision says, he lost all gadgets and his home to the tragedy while Maria Nakitende had her house demolished with all associated properties.
