Toyota must come out of the garage and clear the air

By Brian Keitira

As the political landscape heats up, one name continues to be dragged into the muddle of speculation and blackmail: Michael Nuwagira, popularly known as Toyota, the National Vice Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda.

Despite his significant contributions to youth empowerment and mentorship, Toyota has been subjected to relentless blackmail by self-seekers trying to exploit his influence. As the saying goes, “When you’re on a pedestal, you’re a target for stones.” It’s time for Toyota to take control of the narrative.

With a legacy of grooming future leaders, Toyota has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of many young politicians. Notable examples include the current MP for Bukanga, Stephen Kangwagye, and many others who have risen through the ranks under his mentorship. His endorsement carries significant weight, and his influence extends far beyond the confines of Kampala, commanding respect from all over Uganda. Beyond politics, Toyota has also made a lasting impact on education in Uganda. For instance, in December 2024, he contributed 20 million shillings towards keeping needy students in school at Uganda Christian University. This gesture demonstrates his commitment to empowering the young people of Uganda through education.

As the Youth polls approach, Toyota’s endorsement would be a game-changer. Any candidate he supports would be deemed the most ideal for the young people, ensuring continuity of the NRM’s ideals. Mercy Kanyesigye, a protégée of Toyota, has risen through the ranks from UNSA to NYC and now aspires to become the National Female Youth MP. As Secretary for Legal Affairs at the National Youth Council, Mercy has championed the rights of the girl child, showcasing her dedication to promoting gender equality and empowering young women. Her experience in youth politics is undeniable, and Toyota’s support would be a testament to her capabilities. As Nelson Mandela once said, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Toyota’s endorsement would be a significant boost to Mercy’s campaign.

However, instead of openly declaring his support for Mercy, Toyota has been shrouded in silence. This silence has emboldened opportunists to make baseless claims and allegations, further muddying the waters. “Silence is golden” doesn’t apply here; it’s time for Toyota to speak up and assert his leadership. The people are saying, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” Toyota’s silence is being misconstrued, and it’s time for him to reveal the truth.

As a national leader, Toyota has the right to support any candidate of his choice, including Mercy. By declaring his support, Toyota would not only be exercising his democratic right but also putting an end to the petty politics and cheap popularity-seeking that has plagued his reputation. As the saying goes, “The truth will set you free.” It’s time for Toyota to clear the air and demonstrate his commitment to transparency and accountability.

The youth deserve transparency, and Toyota’s endorsement would send a strong message about the kind of leadership they should expect from their leaders. By supporting Mercy, Toyota would be backing a candidate with a proven track record in youth politics and a passion for promoting the rights of young people. It’s time for Toyota to “show his cards” and put an end to speculation.

Let Toyota assert his influence and clear the air. The young people deserve to know who he’s supporting and why. As the National Vice Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Toyota’s voice matters. It’s time for him to “step up to the plate” and demonstrate his leadership, ensuring the NRM’s ideals continue to thrive. The ball is in his court.
