Saving Lives: Nambooze donates medical scan to Buyiga Island residents

For a long time, the residents of Buyiga Island in Mawokota North, Mpigi District, have been facing challenges relating to poor health service delivery.

A mother at the Island would find trouble moving from Buyiga through Sama Villages to Kammengo and later cross to Buwama or Gombe health facility for antenatal care.

“We struggle paying up to Ugx 120,000 to move from the island and coming back just to check on the baby. Sometimes, we fail due to lack of money,” one of the pregnant ladies told this website.

The island receives about 1000 newly born babies every year. However, the health facility on the island could not offer services to its people, leaving many suffering. Some of the mothers would lose their babies since many fail to know the complications relating to their pregnancy.

Upon learning the challenges, Hon Teddy Nambooze, the Mpigi District Woman Member of Parliament, immediately sought support from friends and partners who bought a scanning machine for Buyiga Health Center

On October 9th, Hon Nambooze took the medical scanning machine to the facility to support mothers during pregnancy and ensure that the Health Facility at the Island is functional.

“When I was here on Buyiga Island to celebrate Easter, I identified the problem, and I felt bad that my people are struggling. I mobilized my friends, and we have brought the scan to save our mothers the challenges of hiring boats, engines and coxswains to transport them at high costs to go look for better health facilities,” Hon Nambooze said, garnering thunderous applause from community residents.

Nambooze also asked the communities to further engage in the Tereza Mpigi initiatives that move to support the community by skilling their children and start income generating activies.

“I invite you all to come to the skilling center when exams return and ensure that our children get skills in fashion design, hair dressing, cottage industry through making soap, toilet paper, books, candles and so many other things to have our children get skills,” Hon Nambooze said.

The MP has, for the last five years, supported more than 6000 children within Mpigi with such skills while many other children got schools with lower tuition fees, courtesy of Ms. Nambooze to ensure that they get back to school, lowering the school dropout rate in Mpigi District.
