According to works and transport minister Fred Byamukama, the old system of paying cash had caused traffic jams at certain points or during rush hours.
The Kampala-Entebbe Express Way is one of the busy roads connecting Kampala, to Kajjansi and mostly Entebbe Airport, taking approximately 30-40 minutes.
As Uganda’s road infrastructure continues to grow and attract more motorists, the expressway is the only smooth route allowing cars to accelerate almost to their limits, given the smoothness.
According to Minister Fred Byamukama, the cash-paying method, which requires waiting for a receipt to proceed, is a delay for some people. “We want people to pay cashless, mobile money system linked to even bank automatic teller machine cards. This will enable us to do good accountability.”
Byamukama has been in office for just a few months after being elevated to senior minister, but he has already seen significant changes in the sector, including his lead probe into the Busega-Mpigi highway, which has resulted in the sacking of many engineers over funds mismanagement on President Museveni’s orders.
Uganda is witnessing a shift in efforts to turn the shame of the roads infrastructure into fame, and his words on Entebbe Express remain to be implemented.
