There is a sigh of relief in Kyamuswa Constituency as the County Member of Parliament Carolyn Birungi Nanyondo has introduced health outreach programs for the people in the area.
Kyamuswa County is located in the middle of Lake Victoria and is part of Kalangala District. Its residents live on about 58 scattered islands, making health and medical access tedious and expensive.
The constituency has one Health Center IV facility, four Health Center IIIs, and three Health Center IIs, scattered on only 8 islands, leaving the rest of the islands without a health facility.
“It is now very difficult for us to move from one place to another to ensure we receive medical care. In many instances, we have to hire boats, engines, and fuel to get to a nearby health facility, which is difficult,” says Mayanja Michael, the LC1 Chairperson for Kussu, on Buyovu Island, Bufumira Sub County.
Against this background, the Kyamuswa County Member of Parliament, Hon. Birungi Carolyn Nanyondo, launched parish-level medical outreach programs aimed at bringing health services closer to the people.
On Thursday this week, health workers from Kyamuswa Health Center IV and Bufumira Health Center III came together under the new program and held an outreach for the people.
With support from the Member of Parliament, people within Bufumira Parish, especially from Buyovu, Lwabayuba, Bufumira, and Bugaba Islands, were brought together for the same cause.
“All diseases have been diagnosed and medical supplies are available for all those who need treatment to ensure that they are safe. A healthy Kyamuswa is a thriving and developing constituency,” Hon. Nanyondo said.
The MP also indicated that such medical outreaches will continue within the six parishes that make up Kalangala District to ensure that services are brought closer to the people.
“We are also engaging the Government and Parliament through the Budget Committee to ensure that at least more Health Center IIs are constructed on a number of islands, equipped, and staffed to ensure that our people do not continue suffering while moving from one place to another in quest for medical care,” Hon. Nanyondo said.
More than 2,000 people were diagnosed and supported with medical supplies by a team of 26 health workers from Kyamuswa Health Center IV and Bufumira Health Center III.
Dr. Suuna Michael, the Head of the Kyamuswa Health Sub-District, said more than 50 operations have also been scheduled for patients who needed to be treated in a theater at Kyamuswa Health Center IV and will be treated with immediate effect.
The RDC’s Office, represented by Mr. Henry Lubulwa, said that while the government has always provided staff at different health facilities, they have always been underutilized since many people have been struggling to get resources to transport themselves to health facilities.
“However, this outreach program will enable health workers to reach communities and diagnose the people. In the end, more Ugandans will be supported by our own health workers,” he said.
The health outreach program will next be held in Jaana Parish, Bubeke Sub County, to ensure that more medical services are provided to the underprivileged Ugandans.
