Power belongs to the people: Sembabule’s Namugga speaks out on contesting as Kalangala MP

Mawogola County South Member of Parliament Goretti Namugga has spoken out on contesting as Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament.

Namugga who lost her bid for reelection in January 2026 has been speaking on Radio 4 eulogizing the fallen former Kalangala Legislator, Helen Nakimuli as a people’s servant.

Upon her demise last month, the people of Kalangala assembled up to 37 candidates including Goretti Namugga.

While speaking on Radio 4, Namugga said, she feels proud the people of Kalangala thought about her to replace a friend Helen Nakimuli.

She also indicated that “power belongs to the people” so if at all she is called upon by the party, she would take pride in having a thought on contesting.

“They will have their choice,” Namugga added while speaking on the radio talk show.

Asked if the party sends her with a ticket to contest, Namugga said, “the party listens to the voices of the people of Kalangala in making a substantive decision.”

The Kalangala race has attracted a number of contestants including Journalist Maria Nakitende, Hellen Flavia Nagawa, Idah Nabayiga, youthful Jesca Nassiwa, Ms Roy Dembe Nakigozi, among others.

The electoral commission has organized a stakeholders meeting with the people of Kalangala to draw a roadmap for a byelection to refill the now vaccant seat.

Also, late Nakimuli’s sister, Irene Nampala is expected to contest in the race.
